# How to Create a UPI QR Code

To create a UPI QR code, copy your UPI ID from your payment app, turn it into a code with the name your customers know, and print it — every UPI app can then scan it and pay you, with no merchant account needed.

A UPI QR code is a small square that holds your UPI ID and the name you want
a customer to see. When they scan it from inside GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or their
bank's app, the app fills in who to pay, and all they add is the amount and
their UPI PIN. You do not need a merchant account, a payment company or a
device to make one — your UPI ID is enough.

The ID is the only part you have to get exactly right. It looks like an email
address, ends in your bank's handle such as @okaxis or @ybl, and one wrong
letter sends the customer to a different person or to nobody. The name is only
a label: many apps also show the name your bank holds for the account, so a
customer may see both. Pick a shop name that makes the two easy to match up.

A code you make yourself does not show as a verified merchant. Some apps warn
the payer about that, and the payment still goes through once they approve it.
If you want the verified badge, a spoken alert for each payment, or a daily
sales total, those come with a business QR from a payment app or your bank.
Many small shops start with their own code and move across once takings grow.

One risk is worth knowing about. Someone can stick their own QR code over yours
at the counter, and payments then go to them instead of to you. Look at your
printed code every morning, and when a customer pays, check that your phone
shows the payment before they leave.

## Make and print your UPI QR code
1. Open your UPI app and tap your profile picture. Your UPI ID is listed there and looks like chaicorner@okaxis.
2. If the app lists more than one UPI ID, pick the one linked to the bank account you want the shop's takings in.
3. Make the code with the UPI QR code generator on this site, using that ID and your shop's name.
4. Ask someone to pay you ₹1 by scanning the code from their phone, and check it arrives in your own app before you print anything.
5. Print it without trimming the white border around it, and put it where the customer stands to pay.
6. Look at the printed code every morning, in case someone has stuck their own code over it.

## FAQ
### Is it free to make a UPI QR code?
Yes. A UPI QR code is an open format that holds your UPI ID and a name, and making one costs nothing on this site or anywhere else. UPI payments into a shop also carry no fee, so the code costs nothing to use either.

### Does one UPI QR code work with GPay, PhonePe and Paytm?
Yes. Every UPI app reads the same format, so one printed code takes payments from GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and any bank's own UPI app. You do not need a separate code for each app.

### Can I use my personal UPI ID for my shop?
Yes, the code works with any UPI ID. Your bank's normal limits on UPI payments still apply, and a personal account that takes many small payments every day may draw questions from the bank. For steady shop takings, a business account and a merchant QR is the tidier route.

### How do I know a customer actually paid?
Check your own UPI app or your bank's SMS, never the customer's phone. A screen held up at the counter can be an old payment or a fake screenshot. This is the one thing a sound box does better, because it reads out each payment as it lands.

### Can someone scan my QR code and take money from me?
No. Scanning a UPI QR code opens a payment to the person who made the code, and money only moves after the payer enters their own UPI PIN. If a stranger sends you a code and says scanning it will send you money, it is a scam: scanning always pays, it never receives.

### What happens if I change my bank or UPI ID?
You print a new code. The UPI ID is written inside the pattern, so an old code keeps sending payments to the old ID for as long as that ID exists. Take down every old copy the same day you switch.
